About Arlene

In 1982, Arlene was the first girl to have a Bat Mitzvah ever in Brampton, Ontario! Her ceremony was in the drama/theatre room at her local high school and it couldn’t have been more memorable and wonderful. In the end, it’s always the people in the family that “make the party!”

Arlene has been a cantorial soloist since she was 9 years old. She’s an experienced Bar/Bat Mitzvah tutor and Shabbat/High Holydays Family Service leader having officiated services all over Toronto and the GTA for over 20 years.

Arlene holds degrees in Music Theatre Performance and Nutritional Sciences. She is a cantorial soloist of great versatility who is equally at home in a wide range of musical styles. She has officiated many Bar/Bat Mitzvot and assisted in the officiating of Jewish and interfaith weddings. She has led outreach services for several Jewish communities over the years and currently officiates at the Lodzer Centre Congregation for the High Holiday Services and special occasions. Arlene has performed many leading roles with regional music theatre companies and various synagogues and Jewish Community Centres and community organizations. Her favourite role to date is Fantine of Les Miserables!

Particularly fluent in the wide scope of Jewish music, Arlene brings in the traditional melodies to modern versions of prayer from all the Jewish movements.  Her pleasant alto/mezzo soprano voice enable her to soar through the majestic compositions of Judaism’s musical treasure trove, to the most contemporary spirited renditions of Shabbat melodies and morning prayers.

Arlene’s niche is helping families feel perfectly comfortable holding a Bar or Bat Mitzvah service for their child. She has the ability to make an instant community that feels warm without any awkwardness or fear about feeling out of place.
